Based on speculation by the Zampitella family analysts it was believed that Agostino (1851) and Raffaele (1854) were sons of the same father Amato Maria. But tradition and other evidence suggests the two may be cousins. Tradition dictates that the first born male be named after the father's father. Agostino's first son was Salvatore born in (1887) not Amato. Salvatore traveled to the USA in the early 1900's where he married Michelina and they followed the tradition by naming their first son Agostino.

To further support that Amato Maria had a brother Salvatore we searched the Nusco death records to find a Salvatore Zampitella based on the assumption that Agostino's father was Salvatore and not Amato Maria. The search revealed a Salvatore Zampitelli and his wife Giuseppa Calabrese as the parents of Agostino Zampitelli who passed away in 1909. The death certificate does not list Agostino's spouse as Nicoletta Favale it instead lists the spouse as Domenica Mongelluzzo.

This information is significant in that it represents another Zampitelli that would appear to be related in age to Amato Maria. This finding opens the door to other possibilities regarding the descendants of Salvatore. For instance based on 1920 Census Information obtained in Philadelphia  a Michele Zampitella lived with his family two doors down from Salvatore Zampitella on Simpson Street. The occupants of the home included Michele  his wife Maria and his children Raffaele (1904) Antonio (1910) Agostino (1913), Rosina (1914), Leonora (1916) and Luigi (1918). Is this Census Information accurate with regard to these children or did Michele provide a home in America for the children of other Zampitella parents?

Strong evidence suggests that Amato Maria had a brother. Was it Salvatore Zampitelli? If so, how many children were born of Salvatore and Giuseppa Calabrese? We know that one child named Agostino (1851) exists and we believe that Agostino is responsible for some of the Zampitelli/Zampitellas in Italy and the USA. Did Agostino have siblings? We will keep searching for answers, but we need help from our relatives throughout the World.
